Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a safe and effective procedure which reduces the blood flow to the knee joint. Interventional Radiologists conduct this minimally invasive procedure to reduce the inflammation and pain associated with moderate to severe osteoarthritis. While it does not treat the underlying osteoarthritis disease, GAE is an effective way to manage the pain, discomfort, and inflammation that come from osteoarthritis.
GAE is performed by an interventional radiologist and involves inserting a catheter into knee arteries, injecting tiny particles into the arteries of the knee joint to reduce blood supply, and leading to reduced inflammation and pain from osteoarthritis.
